OSTI Multi-Language Literary Translation Workshop

  (6 weeks)

Open to translators working from any language into English

Approved for 6 ATA CEs (continuing education credits)

Are you interested in literary translation? Could you use extra support or feedback to develop a project in progress or to finally start that literary translation you’ve always dreamt of doing? Do you find yourself more isolated than ever as a literary translator? Do days or weeks go by when you've only talked to your plants or cats?

Join Allison A. deFreese and literary translators from around the world for this fun, collaborative, interactive six-week workshop through the Oregon Society of Translators and Interpreters (OSTI)!

This workshop, open to both emerging and established literary translators, will provide you with the opportunity to workshop your choice of 1 of the following in each of 3 workshopping sessions (for example, you can submit poetry in one of the workshopping sessions and prose in another):

  • Up to 3 pages of poetry (maximum 9 pages overall)
  • Up to 5 pages of short fiction or nonfiction in progress (typed, double spaced in 12-point font) (maximum 15 pages overall)
  • OR Revise and receive feedback on a single longer piece as your focus for the course (up to 15 pages total, typed and double spaced in 12-point font; length to be agreed with the instructor)
  • OSTI's Literary Translation Workshop includes readings, online discussions about literary translation and best practice, as well as translation practice and critiques of work in progress (on alternate weeks).
